Laurids Gallée (1988) is a Rotterdam-based designer who creates distinctive, one-of-a-kind pieces that prioritize material and artistic expression over conventional functionality. Central to his creative process is a sense of playfulness, which dares to explore unexpected shapes and ways of manipulating materials. This approach uncovers the artistic depth within each piece, inviting a sense of wonder. Exposed to creative practices from an early age, Gallée briefly studied anthropology before graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2015. He spent the following years learning different manufacturing techniques, as a craftsman in art and design production. In 2017, he founded his own studio in Rotterdam. His work explores traditional and folkloric elements, reimagining them within the context of modern materiality, while also embracing today’s advanced manufacturing processes to create a contemporary fusion. The studio’s work revolves around two primary mediums: wood and resin. Every piece is meticulously sculpted or painted by hand, with careful attention to detail and finishes. By merging craftsmanship with contemporary manufacturing techniques, Laurids Gallée’s studio bridges traditional and modern processes. Laurids Gallée has garnered significant recognition in the design world. In 2024, he was featured on the AD100 list and named Emerging Designer of the Year by ELLE Decor. His collaborations include prominent brands such as Dolce & Gabbana. Gallée’s work has been featured in leading design galleries, including Objects With Narratives in Brussels and Collectional in Dubai. Additionally, his pieces have been showcased at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and at renowned international design fairs, such as Salone del Mobile in Milan, PAD Paris, and Collectible.
